As a home mortgage lender, we have built a reputation around being tremendously helpful to people pursuing their dreams of homeownership. But our local Fairway branch does so much more than equip potential homebuyers with the loans they need to move forward. We’re all about making a difference in local communities. It always has been and always will be part of our mission. And this spirit of giving back was on display yet again this past Tuesday when we took a team to volunteer at a local food drive.

What Happened

We brought a team of five and we’re ready to help wherever we could. Initially, our group was signed up to help sort and unbox food items that came into the facility, however, when we arrived we had the opportunity. Our Coordinator asked if we wanted to join another group of volunteers and help pack bags of food for student’s backpacks!

Our team jumped on the opportunity and got right to work. We formed an assembly line and packed items such as: peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, rice, and other non-perishable items into plastic bags and placed them into bins once finished. The final step would be for these items to be placed into students backpacks at school on Friday afternoons and brought home to their families over the weekend.

“This was such a fun experience to be a part of. I am so thankful to be part of a company that has a heart for it’s local people and community” – Fairway of the Carolinas – Bart Good

Making an Impact

Founded in 1981, Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina (otherwise known as SHMETROLINA), provides food for over 800 partner agencies. The goal is to eliminate hunger by the solicitation and distribution of food. SHMETROLINA annually distributes over 70 million pounds of food and other household items throughout 24 counties, including 14 in North Carolina. Forty-two million pounds of its annual distribution is fresh produce, meat and dairy. Nearly 15 percent of the organization’s service area population, over 553,000 people, lives in poverty. This includes nearly 182,000 children and almost 48,000 seniors.

The Wrap

This was such a fun experience to be a part of. Our group had a wonderful time and had the opportunity to meet some wonderful volunteers along the way. We are proud to have packed 1,000 bags of food for families in our local area! We are looking forward to returning to volunteer again soon!

Of course, our impact on communities doesn’t stop with food drives. We are also committed to hosting blood drives with our friends at One Blood. We have an upcoming drive on April 14th from 8am to 2pm at our Blakeney location! You can sign up or learn more at www.fairwayblooddrive.com. You can also meet our team by visiting the Fairway of the Carolinas website.
