No one likes being stuck at home. Our team at Fairway of the Carolinas is no exception. Due to COVID-19, we haven’t been around each other a whole lot in the last year-and-a-half. So, every opportunity we have to be together, we take it. With this in mind – and our ongoing goal to be as physically fit as possible – seven of our teammates (and a few of their family members) participated in the Around the Crown 10K held Labor Day weekend in Charlotte. Find out how they did and learn a little bit about about this event.
The background
The Around the Crown 10K is an annual 10-kilometer race that takes place on Interstate 277 – Charlotte’s major inner beltway. Proceeds from the event support Partners for Parks. This independent non-profit 501(c)(3) organization preserves and maintains over 200 parks and facilities covering almost 20,000 acres of parkland in Mecklenburg County. Event organizers created the Around the Crown 10K to promote the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other to move Charlotte forward.
The purpose is to show that running can make people healthier, happier and more confident regardless of their background. Even organizers also place an emphasis on working together to sustain the environment, which includes recycling. This was the first year our teammates came together to participate.
The highlights
A total of 2,795 people ran in the Around the Crown 10K, which occurred under sunny skies with temperatures around 65 degrees. Leading the way among the Fairway of the Carolinas contingent was one of our mortgage planners, Hayden Poell. Operations manager Hannah Heaslet participated in her first 10K and recorded a personal-best 10K time. All seven Fairway of the Carolinas teammates and their family members went the full distance.
“No one needed a medic,” said Jeff Reeves, another one of our mortgage planners who ran. “There were several highlights but, most important, we all crossed the finish line. No one had to be picked up by the bus for going too slow.” Several of our teammates have already made plans to enter upcoming long-distance events.
