At Fairway of the Carolinas, our speciality is helping people secure a loan to purchase the home they’ve always wanted. However, our heart is giving back to the community. The latest example of this occurred on Wednesday, April 21, as Fairway of the Carolinas hosted its fourth blood drive in less than three years.

Teaming up with us for the event, which took place at our Blakeney office in South Charlotte, was OneBlood — a not-for-profit organization that provides safe, available and affordable blood to more than 200 hospital partners and their patients throughout the Southeast. This area includes Charlotte, which is home to one of OneBlood’s six main campuses.

OneBlood distributes nearly one million blood products annually, employs more than 2,000 people, operates more than 80 donor centers, and deploys nearly 200 of its signature Big Red Buses throughout its service area for blood drives (view a map of the OneBlood service area). OneBlood also has multiple laboratories, and manufacturing and distribution sites strategically located throughout its service area, enabling quick response to hospital needs and availability of blood products (watch a video about the journey of your blood).

‘Let’s Save Lives’

At Wednesday’s Fairway of the Carolinas blood drive, 15 people donated one unit of blood. Fairway of the Carolinas’ Branch Manager, Ken Land, went the extra mile and donated two units. These 16 blood products will help up to 48 local hospital patients.

“Fairway of the Carolinas makes a point to serve the community any way they can, whether through group or individual efforts,” said Kristen Lieber, Branch Business Manager for Fairway of the Carolinas. “This group initiative was very well-attended, and it was awesome to see so many teammates taking time out of their busy day to support this cause. Makes me feel very proud to be a part of this amazing team.”

On average, just one pint of blood saves three lives.

“I love helping people any way I can!” said Erin Mick, who serves as loan processor-team lead for the local Fairway branch. “I brought a friend with me who loves to do hot yoga on her lunch break, but I told her to come with me, and let’s save lives instead!”

A total of 61 people have donated blood at Fairway of the Carolinas’ four blood drives since 2019. As a “thank you,” we always give away “goodies,” and representatives from OneBlood typically hand out free T-shirts. This year, all blood donors left with a $10 gift card.
