1) Hang pots and pans
If you’re tired of trying to shove pots and pans in a kitchen cabinet, try hanging them. You can do this with a long towel bar, or maybe two. Or you can install hooks above your kitchen island. Either way, it’s a DIY storage idea that will save space in arguably the busiest and most important room of the house.
2) Hide cleaning supplies
Nothing looks much worse than a broom, dustpan, mop and other cleaning supplies sitting on the floor. Thankfully, there’s a much neater approach worth trying. It’s using a simple wire wall mount rack and a caddy to hang these items. The other good news? You don’t need a whole closet to store your cleaning essentials. A fairly tall cabinet will work just fine.
3) Designate a place for rain gear
If you’re like a lot of homeowners, you probably don’t have a particular area for storing wet-weather gear. You can change this, however, by mounting an umbrella holder on the wall by the front door. With this in place, you won’t be tempted to throw your umbrella down in a random room and drip water all over the house in the process. And, of course, it’ll save space, too. For the same reasons, we also recommend fastening a coat hook to the wall nearby.
4) Move old clothing under the bed
As DIY storage ideas go, this one might be the simplest of all. Rather than keeping your out-of-season clothes hanging in your bedroom closet, save some space and move them under the bed. Obviously, just shoving them under the bed isn’t going to help much, but putting them in flat, plastic storage bins will. Once you’ve folded the clothes and placed them in the bins, just tuck the bins out-of-sight under your bed. No one will ever know they’re there, except for you. Then when the time is right, they’ll be exactly where you left them, and you can swap one set of clothes for another.
5) Put labels on your laundry baskets
This is another DIY storage idea that couldn’t be more cut and dry. Inevitably, clothes will sometimes spill over from baskets onto the laundry room floor. As a way to avoid this and keep them organized, try labeling your baskets. So, for example, you could have a basket for towels, a basket for undergarments, and a separate basket for each person’s clothes. Tripping over clothes in the laundry room isn’t much fun, so do yourself a favor and try the labeling method. It probably won’t cost you anything, but it could save you a lot of hassle.
